Host: Mena Fombo
Being an ally is not about you, but rather about how you can best you support an oppressed group. This could be your child, your partner, an employee/employer, a friend…the list goes on.
At this session, you are invited to discuss the role of being a ‘Great Ally’, specifically in the context of the Black Girl Movement. Hear from black women about their experience first hand and what they desire from allyship, find out how the Black Girl Movement also benefits you and how you can support each other to be great allies.
This is a safe discussion and exploration space, with inspiring speakers and facilitators. It includes lots of room for small group discussion, creative thinking and Q&A.
Come with positive energy, an open mind, and a passion for radical change.
Who is this for?
Anyone who wants to join the movement in understanding how and what to do when supporting marginalised and oppressed groups.
All backgrounds welcome (e.g genders, race, class etc…)
We strongly encourage white men and women to attend this event, as we recognise they are currently under-represented in supporting the movement for Equality.
This session is also a fundraising event, with ticket sale profits going directly towards funding Black Girl Convention 2018.
Black Girl Convention: Teens | 15th November, 2018 | Venue TBC
We recognise there are a number of young people who live with non-black parents or carers, but still identify, or partially identify as black of African and Caribbean heritage who would benefit and most importantly enjoy being part of this event. There may also be those who prefer to attend independent of a parent; this session is also for them.
We will be holding a BGC Teen session for anyone aged 14-17yrs to meet other young womxn, make new friends, meet our young people’s team – find out what to expect and join the meet up group on the day of the event with some friendly faces.
